Asdrubal Cabrera is off to a slow start for the Cleveland Indians

Starting 2B Asdrubal Cabrera better start hitting soon or he might switch positions with Josh Barfield in AAA ball. Cabrera has played in 20 games so far this season for the Tribe and he is 14 for 67 (.209 avg, .564 OPS) with 8 runs scored and 8 RBIs. But, Josh Barfield isn’t exactly ripping the cover off the ball in Buffalo. Barfield has played in 21 games in AAA ball so far this season and he is 21 for 89 (.236 avg, .677 OPS) with 8 runs scored, 3 homers, 7 RBIs and 2 stolen bases. The Indians gave up a lot to get Barfield so they will likely give him another chance at some point this season. They would be leery of trading him as they are still a little snakebit from the Brandon Phillips trade a couple of years ago.

The Cleveland Indians must be wondering….”What is wrong with C.C. Sabathia?”

C.C. Sabathia appears to be putting to much pressure on himself as he is in his free agent walk season. Sabathia has started 5 games this season for the Indians and he is 1-3 with a 10.13 ERA and a 2.17 WHIP. C.C. has allowed 36 hits, 5 homers and he has walked 16 batters in only 24 innings. He has whiffed 25 batters in 24 innings which shows that his stuff is still good, but he needs to start pitching instead of just throwing.

The Cleveland Indians send Sean Smith to the Rockies

Blogged under Arrivals & Departures,Bloglockers,Front Page,General by chinmusic on Friday 25 April 2008 at 7:41 pm

The Indians have sent 24-year old righty starting pitcher Sean Smith to the Rockies to complete the trade made over the off season that brought in reserve infielder Jamey Carroll. Smith has started 4 games in AAA ball this season and he is 0-1 with a 4.00 ERA and a 1.33 WHIP. Smith also has whiffed 20 batters in only 18 innings this year. The Indians have a lot of pitchers that they like better than Smith so they think they got decent value for him. Carroll has played in 11 games for the Indians so far this season and he is 5 for 23 (.217 avg, .758 OPS) with 9 runs scored and 2 RBIs. Carroll might start to get more playing time if Asdrubal Cabrera doesn’t start hitting soon.

The Cleveland Indians recall outfielder Ben Francisco from AAA

The Cleveland Indians have recalled 26-year old outfielder Ben Francisco from AAA ball. Francisco wasn’t exactly ripping the cover off the ball in AAA this season. He has played in 18 games in AAA this season and he is 15 for 72 (.208 avg, .552 OPS) with 7 runs scored, 3 RBIs and 2 stolen bases. But, Francisco had a huge spring for the Tribe and he was very productive last season with the Indians. In 25 games with the Indians last season Francisco was 17 for 62 (.274 avg, .803 OPS) with 10 runs scored, 3 homers and 12 RBIs. Francisco will likely get a chance to play a little bit right away as Jason Michaels and Franklin Gutierrez are both off to very slow starts. Michaels has played in 15 games this season for the Indians and he is 5 for 40 (.125 avg, .363 OPS) with 1 run scored, 5 RBIs and 1 stolen base. Gutierrez has been starting in RF and he hasn’t really played that well either. Gutierrez has played in 17 games for the Indians this year and he is 12 for 59 (.203 avg, .571 OPS) with 6 runs scored, 1 homer, 5 RBIs and 2 stolen bases.

The Cleveland Indians place Jake Westbrook on the D.L.

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General,Injuries by chinmusic on Tuesday 22 April 2008 at 2:21 pm

The Indians have placed righty starter Jake Westbrook on the 15-day disabled list with a left intercostal strain. In layman’s terms it’s a strain in some muscles around his rib cage. Westbrook has been a victim of lame run support in his starts this season. He has started 4 games this season and he is 1-2 with a 2.73 ERA and a 1.11 WHIP. Westbrook will be replaced in the rotation by either Aaron Laffey or Jeremy Sowers who will be called up on Saturday. 23-year old Aaron Laffey has started 4 games in AAA ball this season and he is 3-1 with a 3.13 ERA and a 1.26 WHIP. Laffey had some success in Cleveland last season as he started 9 games for the Indians and he was 4-2 with a 4.56 ERA and a 1.34 WHIP. 24-old Jeremy Sowers has started 4 games in AAA this season and he is 0-2 with a 3.18 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP. Sowers had a rough time with the Tribe last season. He started 13 games for the Indians last year and he was 1-6 with a 6.42 ERA and a 1.56 WHIP. Laffey is more likely to get the call. The Indians have recalled outfielder Ben Francisco to replace Westbrook on the roster.
