What in the world is wrong with 1B Ryan Garko of the Cleveland Indians?

27-year old righty swinging 1B Ryan Garko looked like he was going to be a centerpiece of the Indians lineup for years to come after his breakout 2007 season. In 2007, Garko played in 138 games for the Indians and he was 140 for 484 (.289 avg, .842 OPS) with 62 runs scored, 21 homers and 61 RBIs. But, he hasn’t looked good this season causing the Indians to re-evaluate what they have in him. The converted catcher is not even near an average defender at 1B so if he’s not hitting he shouldn’t be playing. Garko has played in 90 games this season for the Indians and he is 74 for 313 (.236 avg, .657 OPS) with 35 runs scored, 8 homers and 49 RBIs. He will likely have the rest of the season to show he can do but if he doesn’t shape up he won’t be getting near as many at bats in 2008 for the Indians.

The Cleveland Indians activate Fausto Carmona from the D.L.

The Cleveland Indians have activated righty starting pitcher Fausto Carmona from the disabled list. He has started 10 games for the Indians this season and he is 4-2 with a 3.10 ERA and a 1.59 WHIP. Hopefully Carmona found his control while on the disabled list because if he hasn’t look for his ERA to rise. The Indians demoted Aaron Laffey to AAA ball to make room for Carmona on the roster. Laffey started 16 games for the Indians this season and he was 5-7 with a 4.23 ERA and a 1.43 WHIP. He has pitched awful lately but the Indians should have kept him up and sent Jeremy Sowers to the minors as he has stunk all season long. Sowers has started 10 games this season for the Indians and he is 1-5 with a 6.44 ERA and a 1.83 WHIP. I’m starting to wonder if Sowers has something on somebody in the front office.

Look for the Cleveland Indians to continue purging payroll before the trade deadline

The Indians will likely continue to purge payroll before July 31st. Dave Dellucci, Jamey Carroll, Paul Byrd and Rafael Betancourt are all likely to have a new name on the front of their uniforms before August. Don’t expect a huge return for any of those guys. The one player who could draw a lot of interest around the league is shortstop Jhonny Peralta. If the Indians get an offer that they can’t refuse it’s quite possible they will move him as he’s not a front office favorite.

The Cleveland Indians acquire Anthony Reyes from the Cardinals

The Cleveland Indians have acquired 26-year old righty starting pitcher Anthony Reyes from the Cardinals for 24-year old righty reliever Luis Perdomo. This was a steal for the Indians who should consider bringing him right to the majors to bump Jeremy Sowers out of the rotation. Reyes has started 11 games in AAA ball this season and he is 2-3 with a 3.25 ERA and a 1.37 WHIP. He also worked in 10 games (0 starts) for the Cardinals this season in which he was 2-1 with 1 save, a 4.91 ERA and a 1.30 WHIP. Reyes has the stuff to be a dominating pitcher and he showed that on the biggest stage dominating the Tigers in the World Series a couple of years ago. Hopefully the Indians can unlock the key to Reyes’ immense talent. He has now pitched in 53 games (38 starts) in his major league career and he is 10-24 with 1 save, a 5.38 ERA and a 1.35 WHIP. Reyes has a big time problem with gopher balls as he has allowed 37 homers in only 220.2 innings in the majors. Still, getting Reyes for a marginal prospect is a great move for the Indians.

24-year old righty reliever Luis Perdomo is a late bloomer as he wasn’t considered much of a prospect prior to this season. Perdomo has pitched in 40 games (0 starts) this season in A+AA ball and he is 5-1 with 19 saves, a 1.66 ERA and a 1.01 WHIP.

The Cleveland Indians recall Andy Gonzalez from AAA

Blogged under Bloglockers,Front Page,General by chinmusic on Saturday 26 July 2008 at 3:31 pm

The Indians have recalled 26-year old righty swinging infielder/outfielder Andy Gonzalez from AAA to replace Casey Blake on the active roster. Don’t expect much out of him as he isn’t much of a hitter. Gonzalez has played in 83 games in AAA-ball this season and he is 70 for 289 (.242 avg, .700 OPS) with 37 runs scored, 7 homers and 35 RBIs. Still, those numbers are vastly superior to the ones he put up with the White Sox as a rookie last season. Gonzalez played in 67 games with the White Sox last season and he was 35 for 189 (.185 avg, .529 OPS) with 17 runs scored, 2 homers and 11 RBIs.
