The Cleveland Indians have re-signed catcher Damaso Espino to a minor league contract. He returns to the Tribe after playing in 31 games for the Akron Aeros last season. Espino played in 44 games in AA+AAA last season and he was 34 for 138 (.246 avg, .595 OPS) with 10 runs scored and 11 RBIs. Espino will likely play again in AA for the Indians as he is pretty deep on the organizational depth chart to start the season.

The Cleveland Indians have invited 30-year old righty swinging infielder Andy Cannizaro to spring training. Cannizaro played in 127 games in AAA ball last season and he was 109 for 426 (.256 avg, .661 OPS) with 47 runs scored, 5 homers and 42 RBIs. He also played in 1 game for the Tampa Bay Rays last season and he was 0 for 1. He has now played in 14 games in his major league career and he is 2 for 9 (.222 avg, .856 OPS) with 5 runs scored, 1 homer and 1 RBI. This was a smart move for the Indians as Cannizaro gives them some experienced depth at AAA.

The Indians will likely be on the hunt for a starting 2B or 3B, a power hitting corner outfielder, a starting pitcher and a closer. The Indians are being most aggressive in looking for a closer as they have already likely talked to Trevor Hoffman, Kerry Wood and Brian Fuentes. Of those three guys I think Wood would be the best fit because he has the best arm of this bunch. The Indians are talking to Casey Blake about a return to the team but he’s the top 3B on the market so he won’t be cheap. I think the Indians should look more at 2B with the idea of moving Asdrubal Cabrera to SS and Jhonny Peralta to 3B. With that in mind the Indians will likely talk to Mark Grudzielanek, Mark Loretta and David Eckstein. Of this bunch I happen to like Loretta the best. The Indians could also take a look see at Jeff Kent or Ray Durham. A longshot for the Indians would be to bring back Omar Vizquel and move Peralta to 3B while leaving Cabrera at 2B. But, that’s likely a pipe dream. The Indians could use a veteran in the starting rotation to teach the kids the right way to do things. With that in mind look for the Tribe to kick the tires on Pedro Martinez, Freddy Garcia and Jon Lieber. The Indians might be looking for the second tier of outfielders as Garret Anderson or Jim Edmonds could be a good fit for LF.
