The Indians have placed 25-year old lefty starting pitcher Scott Lewis on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left elbow. He has started one game for the Indians this season working in 4 1/3 innings while allowing 7 hits and 4 earned runs. The Indians have recalled veteran Vinnie Chulk to replace Lewis on the pitching staff. He might only be with the Indians until Lewis’ spot comes up again in the starting rotation. If the Indians decide to use 25-year old lefty Zach Jackson in the rotation in Lewis’ spot than Chulk will get to stay. But, if the Indians decide to use fellow 25-year old lefty Aaron Laffey than Chulk will likely get returned to the minors. Jackson has pitched in 1 game out of the bullpen for the Indians this season working 4 innings and allowing 2 earned runs while whiffing 6 batters and walking none. He has now pitched in 20 games (16 starts) in his major league career and he is 4-5 with a 5.45 ERA and a 1.50 WHIP. Aaron Laffey has pitched in 25 games (all starts) in his two years with the Tribe and he is 9-9 with a 4.34 ERA and a 1.40 WHIP. Laffey is probably a better pitcher than Jackson but the Indians need to decide if they need Chulk in the bullpen or not.
