The Cleveland Indians place Scott Lewis on the D.L.

The Indians have placed 25-year old lefty starting pitcher Scott Lewis on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left elbow. He has started one game for the Indians this season working in 4 1/3 innings while allowing 7 hits and 4 earned runs. The Indians have recalled veteran Vinnie Chulk to replace Lewis on the pitching staff. He might only be with the Indians until Lewis’ spot comes up again in the starting rotation. If the Indians decide to use 25-year old lefty Zach Jackson in the rotation in Lewis’ spot than Chulk will get to stay. But, if the Indians decide to use fellow 25-year old lefty Aaron Laffey than Chulk will likely get returned to the minors. Jackson has pitched in 1 game out of the bullpen for the Indians this season working 4 innings and allowing 2 earned runs while whiffing 6 batters and walking none. He has now pitched in 20 games (16 starts) in his major league career and he is 4-5 with a 5.45 ERA and a 1.50 WHIP. Aaron Laffey has pitched in 25 games (all starts) in his two years with the Tribe and he is 9-9 with a 4.34 ERA and a 1.40 WHIP. Laffey is probably a better pitcher than Jackson but the Indians need to decide if they need Chulk in the bullpen or not.

The Cleveland Indians place Jamey Carroll on the D.L.

The Indians have placed veteran infielder Jamey Carroll on the 15-day disabled list after he broke a bone in his left hand in the teams’ last exhibition game. Carroll will be replaced on the roster by veteran infielder Tony Graffanino. Graffanino has more thump in his bat than Carroll does but he can’t handle playing shortstop defensively.

The Cleveland Indians trade Edwin Mujica to the Padres

The Indians have traded 24-year old righty reliever Edwin Mujica to the Padres for a player to be named later. Mujica pitched in 33 games (0 starts) for the Indians last season in which he was 3-2 with a 6.75 ERA and a 1.45 WHIP. He pitched in 53 games (0 starts) in his career with the Indians and he was 3-3 with a 6.04 ERA and a 1.46 WHIP. The Indians shouldn’t miss Mujica much as he’s really shown nothing at the major league level yet.
