The Indians will likely call up 25-year old righty swinging Matt LaPorta to replace the departed Russell Branyan as the starting 1B. LaPorta has played in 18 games since his demotion to AAA and he is 25 of 69 (.362 avg, 1.094 OPS) with 7 runs scored, 5 homers and 16 RBIs. He also has been showing good plate discipline in the minors walking 12 times while whiffing 10 times. The Indians hope that regular playing time will finally give LaPorta the confidence he needs to succeed in the majors. He played in 35 games for the Indians earlier this season and he was 26 of 119 (.218 avg, .567 OPS) with 13 runs scored, 1 homer and 7 RBIs. The Indians’ fallback plan if LaPorta fails is likely Andy Marte so it’s time for LaPorta to step up.
