The Indians are 26-47 (14.5 GB) on the season so let the Fire Sale start. The Indians have traded 34-year old lefty swinging 1B Russell Branyan to the Seattle Mariners for 23-year old lefty swinging outfielder Ezequiel Carrera and 21-year old switch hitting shortstop Juan Diaz. Branyan played in 52 games for the Indians this season and he was 45 of 171 (.263 avg, .819 OPS) with 24 runs scored, 10 homers and 24 RBIs. He has played in 294 games for the Indians in six years with them and he is 205 of 882 (.232 avg, .783 OPS) with 124 runs scored, 55 homers and 139 RBIs. The Indians will likely recall Matt LaPorta to start at 1B with Branyan off to Seattle. Ezequiel Carrera was the Mariners’ #15 prospect heading into this season according to Baseball America. Carrera played in 64 games in AAA-ball this season for the Mariners and he was 57 of 213 (.268 avg, .654 OPS) with 24 runs scored, 0 homers, 18 RBIs and 9 stolen bases. He has now played in 436 games in his six years in the minors and he is 462 of 1,587 (.291 avg, .750 OPS) with 265 runs scored, 11 homers, 144 RBIs and 115 stolen bases. Juan Diaz was not one of the Mariners’ top 30 prospects coming into this season. Diaz has played in 70 games in A-ball this season and he is 75 of 254 (.295 avg, .779 OPS) with 39 runs scored, 7 homers, 41 RBIs and 8 stolen bases. He has now played in 416 games in his five years in the minors and he is 380 of 1,490 (.255 avg, .668 OPS) with 181 runs scored, 16 homers, 159 RBIs and 25 stolen bases. The Indians will also either send the remaining $1.1 million bucks on Branyan’s contract or a player to be named later. The Indians appear to have gotten some value for Branyan but it always sucks to see a team giving up on their season especially since it’s still June.
