The Cleveland Indians have signed 27-year old righty reliever/starter Doug Mathis to a minor league contract. Mathis pitched in 13 games (0 starts) for the Rangers last season and he was 1-1 with a 6.04 ERA and a 1.84 WHIP. Mathis has now pitched in 45 games (6 starts) in his first three years in the majors and he is 3-3 with 1 save, a 4.84 ERA and a 1.62 WHIP. He has given up 106 hits and 14 homers in only 87 1/3 career innings in the majors so he doesn’t miss many bats. Mathis will likely get a shot to win a role as a long man in the Indians’ bullpen next spring.
