The Cleveland Indians have claimed 1B Michael McDade off waivers

The Indians have claimed 23-year old switch-hitting 1B Michael McDade off waivers from the Blue Jays.  He played in 118 games in AA+AAA-ball for the Jays last year and he was 128 of 449 (.285 avg, .806 OPS) with 53 runs scored, 17 homers, 67 RBIs and 1 stolen base.  McDade has now played in 630 games in his first six years in the minors and he is 626 of 2,364 (.265 avg, .744 OPS) with 278 runs scored, 76 homers, 325 RBIs and 4 stolen bases.  McDade will get a shot to make the Indians’ roster next spring as they have holes at both 1B and DH right now.

The Cleveland Indians DFA Chris Seddon

The Cleveland Indians have designated 29-year old lefty reliever/starter Chris Seddon.  Seddon pitched in 17 games (2 starts) for the Indians last year and he was 1-1 with a 3.67 ERA and a 1.40 WHIP.  He has now pitched in 38 games (6 starts) in his first three years in the majors and he is 2-3 with a 5.47 ERA and a 1.53 WHIP.  Seddon pitched pretty decent for the Indians last year, but they shouldn’t miss him too much moving forward.

UPDATE:  (12/1/2012) – The Indians have decided not to tender a contract to Chris Seddon, making him a free agent.

The Cleveland Indians sign Fernando Nieve

The Indians have signed 30-year old righty starter/reliever Fernando Nieve to a minor league deal.  Nieve pitched in 25 games (24 starts) in AAA-ball for the Mets last year and he was 7-9 with a 5.96 ERA and a 1.68 WHIP.  He last pitched in the majors back in 2010 with the Mets.  Nieve has pitched in 99 games (19 starts) in his first four years in the majors and he is 8-11 with a 4.61 ERA and a 1.41 WHIP.  Nieve will get a shot to win a job on the Tribe’s pitching staff next spring.

The Cleveland Indians DFA Rafael Perez

The Indians have designated 30-year old lefty reliever Rafael Perez for assignment.  Perez pitched in 8 games (0 starts) for the Indians last year and he was 1-0 with a 3.52 ERA and a 1.17 WHIP.  He pitched in 338 games (0 starts) in his seven years with the Indians and he was 21-12 with 3 saves, a 3.64 ERA and a 1.33 WHIP.  The Indians hope that Nick Hagadone will step up to replace Perez in the bullpen in 2013.

UPDATE:  (12/1/2012) – The Indians have decided not to tender a contract for 2013 to Rafael Perez, making him a free agent.

Brent Lillibridge elects to leave the Cleveland Indians as a free agent

29-year old righty swinging infielder Brent Lillibridge has elected to become a free agent.  He played in 43 games for the Indians last year and he was 24 of 111 (.216 avg, .619 OPS) with 15 runs scored, 3 homers, 8 RBIs and 6 stolen bases.  Lillibridge played in 102 games overall last year for the White Sox, Red Sox and Indians in which he was 37 of 190 (.195 avg, .524 OPS) with 25 runs scored, 3 homers, 10 RBIs and 13 stolen bases.  He has now played in 338 games in his first five years in the majors and he is 138 of 649 (.213 avg, .628 OPS) with 100 runs scored, 19 homers, 66 RBIs and 36 stolen bases.  This isn’t much of a loss for the Indians moving forward.
