The Indians have picked up 28-year old righty starting pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez’ option for the 2013 season valued at $5.75 million bucks.  Jimenez pitched in 31 games (all starts) for the Indians last year and he was 9-17 (most losses in majors) with a 5.40 ERA and a 1.61 WHIP.  He has now pitched in 42 games (all starts) in his first two years with the Indians and he is 13-21 with a 5.32 ERA and a 1.57 WHIP.  Jimenez has now pitched in 180 games (179 starts) in his first seven years in the majors and he is 69-66 with a 4.03 ERA and a 1.35 WHIP.  Manager Terry Francona must think that his pitching coach can fix Jimenez, as he was a good pitcher before coming to Cleveland.

The Indians have declined 35-year old lefty swinging DH Travis Hafner’s option for the 2013 season valued at $13 million bucks.  They have bought him out for $2.75 million bucks.  Hafner played in 66 games for the Indians last year and he was 50 for 219 (.228 avg, .784 OPS) with 23 runs scored, 12 homers and 34 RBIs.  Hafner played in 10 years with the Indians and he played in 1,078 games in which he was 1,039 for 3,734 (.278 avg, .890 OPS) with 582 runs scored, 200 homers, 688 RBIs and 9 stolen bases.  Hafner finishes up with the Tribe #8 in team history with his 200 homers.  This is not much of a loss for the Indians as Hafner just couldn’t stay healthy the last few years.

The Cleveland Indians have declined Roberto Hernandez’ option for 2013 valued at $6 million bucks.  Hernandez pitched in only 3 games (all starts) for the Tribe last year due to injury and suspension and he was 0-3 with a 7.53 ERA and a 1.40 WHIP.  He pitched in 184 games (153 starts) in his seven years with the Indians and he was 53-69 with a 4.64 ERA and a 1.43 WHIP.  This is not much of a loss for the Indians as the artist formally known as Fausto Carmona just isn’t a good pitcher, period.
