The Cleveland Indians have designated Jeanmar Gomez for assignment
The Indians have designated 24-year old righty starting pitcher Jeanmar Gomez for assignment. Gomez pitched in 20 games (17 starts) for the Indians last year and he was 5-8 with a 5.96 ERA and a 1.42 WHIP. He has pitched in 42 games (38 starts) in his three years with the Indians and he is 14-16 with a 5.18 ERA and a 1.51 WHIP. I don’t see Gomez making it through waivers, so look for the Tribe to try to deal him in the very near future.
UPDATE: (1/10/2012) – The Indians have dealt Jeanmar Gomez to the Pittsburgh Pirates for 23-year old righty swinging outfielder Quincy Latimore. Latimore played in 126 games in AA-ball for the Pirates last year and he was 104 of 413 (.252 avg, .754 OPS) with 52 runs scored, 15 homers, 71 RBIs and 10 stolen bases. He has now played in 610 games in his first six years in the minors and he is 569 of 2,259 (.252 avg, .730 OPS) with 305 runs scored, 66 homers, 337 RBIs and 50 stolen bases.
