The Indians have signed 32-year old lefty reliever Rich Hill to a minor league deal.  Hill pitched in 25 games (0 starts) for the Red Sox last year and he was 1-0 with a 1.83 ERA and a 1.42 WHIP.  He has now pitched in 118 games (70 starts) in his first eight years in the majors and he is 23-20 with a 4.59 ERA and a 1.35 WHIP.  Hill’s career numbers are skewed quite a bit due to his starts.  In his first 48 games out of the bullpen in his career, Hill is 3-0 with a 2.76 ERA and a 1.30 WHIP.  I really like this pickup for the Tribe as I think Hill will help them in 2013 as long as he can stay healthy.

The Cleveland Indians are well stocked at 2B for 2013

The Cleveland Indians appear really deep at 2B for the 2013 season.  25-year old lefty swinging Jason Kipnis had a pretty solid all-around season in 2012 for the Indians.  He played in 152 games for the Tribe last year and he was 152 of 591 (.257 avg, .714 OPS) with 86 runs scored, 14 homers, 76 RBIs and 31 stolen bases.  He played in 146 games (145 starts) at 2B for the Indians last year and he had 6 errors while showing off pretty good range.  Kipnis has now played in 188 games in his first two years in the majors and he is 189 of 727 (.260 avg, .738 OPS) with 110 runs scored, 21 homers, 95 RBIs and 36 stolen bases.  Kipnis is a player on the rise for the Indians.  31-year old righty swinging Mike Aviles is going to likely be moving all over the field for the Indians in 2013.  He played in 2 games (1 start) for the Red Sox at 2B last year and he didn’t make any errors there.  31-year old righty swinging Ryan Raburn is also going to try to win a bench job for the Indians this spring.  Raburn played in 66 games for the Tigers last year and he was 35 of 205 (.171 avg, .480 OPS) with 14 runs scored, 1 homer, 12 RBIs and 1 stolen base.  He played in 32 games (31 starts) at 2B for the Tigers last year and he had 3 errors while showing off pretty horrible range.  Raburn has now played in 566 games in his first seven years in the majors and he is 403 of 1,573 (.256 avg, .740 OPS) with 223 runs scored, 54 homers, 216 RBIs and 16 stolen bases.  26-year old switch-hitting Cord Phelps is sliding down the depth chart pretty quickly at 2B for the Tribe.  He played in 14 games for the Indians last year and he was 7 for 33 (.212 avg, .538 OPS) with 2 runs scored, 1 homer and 5 RBIs.  Phelps played in 5 games (4 starts) at 2B for the Tribe last year and he didn’t make any errors.  Phelps has now played in 49 games in his first two years in the majors and he is 18 of 104 (.173 avg, .508 OPS) with 12 runs scored, 2 homers, 11 RBIs and 1 stolen base.
