The Cleveland Indians sign Daisuke Matsuzaka

The Indians have signed 32-year old righty starting pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka to a minor league deal.  He pitched in 11 games (all starts) for the Red Sox last year and he was 1-7 with a 8.28 ERA and a 1.71 WHIP.  Matsuzaka gave up 58 hits (11 homers) in only 45 2/3 innings while walking 20 batters and whiffing 41 of them.  Matsuzaka has now pitched in 117 games (116 starts) in his first six years in the majors and he is 50-37 with a 4.52 ERA and a 1.42 WHIP.  Matsuzaka has not been a good pitcher the last four years, but maybe a change of scenery and re-uniting with manager Terry Francona can spark a turnaround for him in 2013.  It doesn’t hurt to give a guy like Matsuzaka a chance, so I like this signing for the Tribe.

UPDATE:  (3/25/2013) – The Indians have released Daisuke Matsuzaka.  He pitched in 4 games (1 start) this spring for the Indians and he was 0-0 with a 2.25 ERA and a 1.38 WHIP.  The Tribe is going to try to re-sign him to a minor league deal in the very near future.

UPDATE II:  (3/26/2013) – The Indians have re-signed Daisuke Matsuzaka to a minor league deal.

The Cleveland Indians have signed 42-year old lefty swinging DH/1B Jason Giambi to a minor league deal.  Giambi played in 60 games for the Rockies last year and he was 20 for 89 (.225 avg, .675 OPS) with 7 runs scored, 1 homer and 8 RBIs.  He has now played in 2,163 games in his first 18 years in the majors and he is 1,968 of 7,021 (.280 avg, .926 OPS) with 1,203 runs scored, 429 homers, 1,405 RBIs and 20 stolen bases.  Giambi will get a shot this spring to show if he has anything left in the gas tank.  The Indians could use some help power wise from the left side of the plate.
