The Indians have signed 32-year old righty starting pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka to a minor league deal. He pitched in 11 games (all starts) for the Red Sox last year and he was 1-7 with a 8.28 ERA and a 1.71 WHIP. Matsuzaka gave up 58 hits (11 homers) in only 45 2/3 innings while walking 20 batters and whiffing 41 of them. Matsuzaka has now pitched in 117 games (116 starts) in his first six years in the majors and he is 50-37 with a 4.52 ERA and a 1.42 WHIP. Matsuzaka has not been a good pitcher the last four years, but maybe a change of scenery and re-uniting with manager Terry Francona can spark a turnaround for him in 2013. It doesn’t hurt to give a guy like Matsuzaka a chance, so I like this signing for the Tribe.
UPDATE: (3/25/2013) – The Indians have released Daisuke Matsuzaka. He pitched in 4 games (1 start) this spring for the Indians and he was 0-0 with a 2.25 ERA and a 1.38 WHIP. The Tribe is going to try to re-sign him to a minor league deal in the very near future.
UPDATE II: (3/26/2013) – The Indians have re-signed Daisuke Matsuzaka to a minor league deal.
