Lonnie Chisenhall could be running out of time with the Cleveland Indians

27-year old lefty swinging RF Lonnie Chisenhall better start hitting soon or the Cleveland Indians could jettison him to AAA when they need another starting pitcher next week.  Chisenhall started this year on the D.L. and he has not hit well at all since returning to action.  Chisenhall has played in 6 games for the Indians so far this year and he is 2 for 18 (.111 avg, .333 OPS) with 1 run scored, 0 homers and 1 RBI.  He has played in 457 games in his six years with the Indians and he is 375 of 1,472 (.255 avg, .709 OPS) with 174 runs scored, 43 homers, 178 RBIs and 11 stolen bases.  Part of the reason that Chisenhall could get sent to the minors soon has been the play of 25-year old lefty swinging rookie outfielder Tyler Naquin.  Naquin came into this season as the Indians’ #6 prospect according to Baseball America.  Naquin has played in 17 games for the Indians so far his year (his first taste of the majors) and he is 13 of 39 (.333 avg, .786 OPS) with 7 runs scored, 0 homers and 2 RBIs.  Naquin also has an edge over Chisenhall because he can play all three outfield positions.

The Cleveland Indians DFA Ross Detwiler

The Cleveland Indians have designated 30-year old lefty reliever Ross Detwiler for assignment.  Detwiler pitched in 7 games (0 starts) for the Indians this year and he was 0-0 with a 5.79 ERA and a 1.50 WHIP.  He has now pitched in 180 games (76 starts) in his first 9 years in the show and he is 21-37 with 1 save, a 4.21 ERA and a 1.45 WHIP.  The Indians have activated 29-year old righty reliever Tommy Hunter to replace Detwiler in the bullpen.  Hunter pitched in 8 games (2 starts) in AAA-ball on a rehab assignment and he was 1-1 with 1 save, a 1.00 ERA and a 0.78 WHIP.  Hunter has pitched in 284 games (75 starts) in his first 8 years in the majors and he is 46-33 with a 16 saves, a 4.31 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP.

Who will the Cleveland Indians call up to fill up the starting rotation?

The Cleveland Indians will need to call up a starting pitcher next week to replace Cody Anderson, who was sent to AAA today.  I think it will be 25-year old righty Mike Clevinger, but the Indians could choose T.J. House instead.  Only time will tell.  Clevinger came into this season as the Indians’ #7 prospect according to Baseball America.  He looked really good in Spring Training for the Indians and it has carried over to the regular season in AAA-ball.  Clevinger has pitched in 4 games (0 starts) for the Indians in AAA-ball so far this year and he is 2-0 with a 3.20 ERA and a 1.22 WHIP.  He has now pitched in 68 games (63 starts) in his first four years in the minors and he is 16-14 with a 3.51 ERA and a 1.20 WHIP.  Clevinger has yet to pitch in the show.  26-year old lefty T.J. House offers more experience.  He has pitched in 3 games (all starts) in AAA-ball for the Indians so far this year and he is 2-0 with a 4.80 ERA and a 1.67 WHIP.  House has pitched in 23 games (22 starts) in his first two years with the Indians and he is 5-7 with a 4.46 ERA and a 1.46 WHIP.

The Cleveland Indians have sent Cody Anderson to AAA

The Cleveland Indians have sent 25-year old righty starting pitcher Cody Anderson to AAA.  Anderson started 4 games for the Indians this year and he was 0-1 with a 7.65 ERA and a 1.90 WHIP.  He gave up 34 hits (6 homers) and 4 walks while whiffing 14 batters in 20 innings of work, so he got hit really hard!  It comes as a little bit of a surprise as Anderson looked great in his first taste of the show with the Indians in 2015, as he worked in 15 games (all starts) in which he was 7-3 with a 3.05 ERA and a 1.11 WHIP.  The Indians have called up 24-year old lefty reliever Kyle Crockett to replace Anderson on the pitching staff.  Crockett pitched in 6 games in AAA-ball out of the pen this year and he is 0-0 with a 1.29 ERA and a 0.86 WHIP.  Crockett has now pitched in 74 games (0 starts) in his first two years with the Tribe and he is 4-1 with a 2.83 ERA and a 1.22 WHIP.  He will give the Indians a second lefty in the pen for the first time in 2016.

The front end of the bullpen is looking good so far this year for the Cleveland Indians

31-year old righty Jeff Manship, 30-year old righty Joba Chamberlain and 31-year old righty Dan Otero are all pitching well for the Cleveland Indians so far this year.  Manship pitched in 32 games (0 starts) for the Indians last year and he was 1-0 with a 0.92 ERA and a 0.76 WHIP.  He is proving so far that 2015 was not a fluke.  Manship has pitched in 6 games (0 starts) for the Indians so far this year and he is 0-0 with a 0.00 ERA and a 1.07 WHIP.  The Indians took a chance on both Chamberlain and Otero who are both coming off rough seasons, just like Manship was in 2014.  Chamberlain pitched in 36 games (0 starts) for the Royals and Tigers in 2015 and he was 0-2 with a 4.88 ERA and a 1.70 WHIP.  But he has looked good for the Tribe so far this year.  He has pitched in 6 games (0 starts) for the Indians so far this year and he is 0-0 with a 0.00 ERA and a 0.38 WHIP.  He has only given up 1 hit in his first 5 1/3 innings for the Tribe!  Otero pitched in 41 games (0 starts) for the A’s last year and he was 2-4 with a 6.75 ERA and a 1.50 WHIP.  He has pitched in 4 games out of the pen for the Indians so far this year and he is 0-0 with a 0.00 ERA and a 0.25 WHIP.  Otero has only given up 1 hit in his first four innings this year.  The Indians hope that this trio continues to pitch well as it really helps extend the bullpen.
