Righty reliever Ray Narleski was a solid pitcher for the Cleveland Indians a long, long time ago.  Narleski pitched in 224 games (42 starts) in his five years with the Indians and he was 39-21 with 53 saves, a 3.22 ERA and a 1.30 WHIP.  He gave up 501 hits and 276 walks while whiffing 383 batters in 597 2/3 innings for the Tribe.  He was an All-Star in 1956 and 1958 for the Cleveland Indians.  But, I think his best overall year was in 1955 for the Tribe.  He pitched in 60 games (1 start) for the Indians in 1955 and he was 9-1 with 19 saves, a 3.71 ERA and a 1.28 WHIP.  He gave up 91 hits and 52 walks while whiffing 94 batters in his 111 2/3 innings in 1955.  Narleski led the Majors in both games pitched (60) and saves (19) in 1955.  Narleski also pitched in 2 games (0 starts) in the playoffs for the Indians and he was 0-0 with a 2.25 ERA and a 0.50 WHIP.  Narleski is still #7 in Indians’ history with his 53 saves!  He is also tied for #25 in ERA (3.22), #37 in WHIP (1.30) and he is tied for #37 in games pitched (224) in Tribe history!

The Cleveland Indians place Yan Gomes on the D.L.

The Cleveland Indians have placed 28-year old righty swinging Yan Gomes off the D.L. due to a separated right shoulder.  Gomes has played in 71 games for the Tribe so far this year and he is 41 of 249 (.165 avg, .512 OPS) with 21 runs scored, 8 homers and 32 RBIs.  He has whiffed 69 times against only 9 walks so far this year, so he wasn’t very selective at the plate.  The Indians have activated 27-year old righty swinging Roberto Perez off the D.L. and he will probably take over as the starting catcher until Gomes returns to action.  Perez has played in 9 games in Rookie+A+AAA-ball on his rehab assignment from his fractured thumb and he was 5 for 16 (.313 avg, .917 OPS) with 5 runs scored, 0 homers and 3 RBIs.  He also has played in 4 games for the Indians earlier this year and he was 0 for 8 (.000 avg, .400 OPS) with 2 runs scored, 0 homers and 1 RBI.  Perez has now played in 103 games in his first three years with the Tribe and he is 65 of 277 (.235 avg, .720 OPS) with 42 runs scored, 8 homers and 26 RBIs.  33-year old righty swinging Chris Gimenez will continue to serve as the backup and Trevor Bauer’s personal catcher moving forward.  Gimenez has played in 35 games for the Tribe so far this year and he is 16 of 85 (.188 avg, .501 OPS) with 9 runs scored, 2 homers and 6 RBIs.

UPDATE:  The Indians will be without Yan Gomes for the next 4-8 weeks.

The Cleveland Indians have placed 30-year old righty reliever Tommy Hunter on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 10th, due to a non-displaced fracture in his lower back.  Hunter has pitched in 21 games (0 starts) for the Indians so far this year and he is 2-2 with a 3.74 ERA and a 1.20 WHIP.  He has given up 21 hits and 5 walks while whiffing 17 batters in his first 21 2/3 innings for the Tribe so far this year.  The Indians have called up 25-year old righty starting pitcher Cody Anderson to replace Hunter in the bullpen.  Anderson has pitched in 9 games (8 starts) for the Indians so far this year and he is 1-4 with a 7.48 ERA and a 1.64 WHIP.  Anderson has also pitched in 6 games (all starts) in AAA-ball for the Indians this year and he is 0-2 with a 4.32 ERA and a 1.44 WHIP.  Anderson has now pitched in 24 games (23 starts) in his first two years with the Indians and he is 8-7 with a 4.48 ERA and a 1.28 WHIP.  The Indians hope that Anderson pitches better for them this time around.
