The Cleveland Indians claim Ezequiel Carrera off waivers from the Phillies

The Indians have claimed 25-year old lefty swinging outfielder Ezequiel Carrera off waivers from the Phillies.  Carrera played in 13 games for the Phillies earlier this year and he was 1 for 13 (.077 avg, .327 OPS) with 2 runs scored.  Carrera played in 116 games in 2011 and 2012 for the Indians and he was 89 for 349 (.255 avg, .653 OPS) with 47 runs scored, 2 homers, 25 RBIs and 18 stolen bases.  He will serve as a backup outfielder for the Tribe.

UPDATE:  (5/6/2013) – The Indians have designated Ezequiel Carrera for assignment for the second time in 2013.  He played in 2 games for the Indians this time around and he was 2 for 4 (.500 avg, 1.000 OPS) with 1  run scored and 1 RBI.

UPDATE II:  (5/7/2013) – Carrera somehow cleared waivers and he has been outrighted to AAA by the Tribe.

The Cleveland Indians have released 2B Matt Antonelli

The Indians have released 28-year old righty swinging 2B Matt Antonelli.  He played in 3 games in AAA-ball for the Indians this year and he was 0 for 6 (.000 avg, .250 OPS).  His lone appearance in the majors came back in 2008 with the Padres.  Antonelli played in 21 games for the Padres in 2008 for the Padres and he was 11 for 57 (.193 avg, .573 OPS) with 6 runs scored, 1 homer and 3 RBIs.  This is not much of a loss for the Tribe moving forward.

Matt Capps is looking sharp in AAA-ball for the Cleveland Indians

29-year old righty reliever Matt Capps is off to a good start in AAA-ball for the Indians in 2013.  He has pitched in 6 games (0 starts) in AAA-ball so far this year and he is 0-0 with a 1.29 ERA and a 1.00 WHIP.  He has given up 6 hits and he has walked 1 batter while whiffing 3 in his first 7 innings pitched so far this year, which is impressive.  Capps pitched in 30 games (0 starts) for the Twins last year and he was 1-4 with 14 saves, a 3.68 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP.  Capps has now pitched in 444 games (0 starts) in his first 8 years in the majors and he is 29-33 with 138 saves, a 3.52 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP.  Capps isn’t going to stay in the minors much longer, so the Indians will likely be forced to make a decision on him in the very near future.

The Cleveland Indians place Lou Marson back on the D.L.

The Indians have placed 26-year old righty swinging catcher Lou Marson back on the 15-day disabled list, due to right shoulder inflammation.  He has played in 3 games for the Indians so far this year and he is 0 for 3 (.000 avg, .400 OPS).  The Indians have recalled 25-year old righty swinging catcher Yan Gomes to replace Marson on the active roster.  Gomes played in 6 games for the Indians in his first go around for them this year and he was 4 for 19 (.211 avg, .842 OPS) with 2 runs scored, 2 homers and 3 RBIs.

The Cleveland Indians have released Delvi Cid

The Indians have released 23-year old righty swinging outfielder Delvi Cid.  Cid played in 9 games for the Indians in AA-ball this year and he was 4 for 28 (.143 avg, .440 OPS) with 6 runs scored and 1 stolen base.  Cid played in 508 games in his seven years in the minors for the Indians and he was 472 of 1,800 (.262 avg, .666 OPS) with 277 runs scored, 12 homers, 133 RBIs and 200 stolen bases.  This is not much of a loss for the Indians moving forward.
